For the texture paintings in particular, I’ve heard many interpretations, from familiar landscapes to personal psychoanalysis. For me, though, it’s all about the process. The making is a journey into the unknown, built from physical marks and the continual adding and removing of materials. I like to scrape away the top layers of paint to reveal what came before, allowing for unplanned results. This physical immersion in the work as in gesture paintings feels emotionally cathartic.
