Carol Barber has been a gallery assistant for Quirk Gallery Charlottesville since 2021 and working as a professional visual artist since 1992. Beginning as an illustrator and graphic designer, she now exhibits as a multi-media artist. Barber’s solo exhibit, A Year in Gestures was held at the Welcome Gallery, presented by New City Arts of Charlottesville, VA in 2020. Her work appears in collections across the United States and is featured on Chestnut Oak Vineyard wine labels and Kris Monson album covers .
She received her B. F. A.  from James Madison University and a M. F. A. from Radford University. Carol’s studio is located in a quiet spot in Barboursville, VA surrounded by land in a conservation easement.

I began my professional career as a digital artist. While working on the computer, I strived to make art as natural appearing as possible by incorporating transparent layers of photographed texture and scanned marks in my digital work. When I went to graduate school, I wanted to move away from digital tools and return to the process of mark-making by hand that I experienced as a child. However, my thinking about working in digital layers never left me even after twenty years of painting in acrylics and mixed media and it still influences my work today with experimentations in transparency and layering.

Countering my process driven paintings is simple drawings of faces which is a subject that I return to again and again. When I need a break from my thoughtful abstract paintings, I turn to drawing something more concrete. Mostly from my imagination and sometimes sketchbook inspired. These are fun and the ending portraits usually surprise me!
