Statement

I began my professional career creating digital illustrations and graphic design for the textbook industry. I strived to make my digital art as natural appearing as possible by incorporating transparent layers of photographed texture and scanned drawings into the digital applications. After working as a digital illustrator, I returned to graduate school. In my studies I wanted to move my digital art into a physical form and incorporate processes of mark-making by hand. At the university, I began printing my digital art on layers of transparent film and painting oil paintings on canvas.

Layering Evolution

Upon transitioning to a home studio, my work evolved into using acrylic paint because of its faster drying times. The nature of the acrylic paint and different Golden brand gel mediums opened up many new layering possibilities. As I continue to use paint as a medium, the digital art that I did early in my career still influences me. This manifests through experimentations with materials and layering of paint. My latest work involves painting directly on transparent substrates and suspending acrylic paint on top of clear acrylic gel. These methods present unique layering techniques all my own.

Faces

Countering my process driven paintings is simple drawings of faces which is a subject that I return to again and again. Mostly from my imagination and sometimes sketchbook inspired. These are fun and the ending portraits usually surprise me!
